Azure Virtual Desktop Hybrid: Benefits & Tradeoffs

Mike Dent

Field CTO - Hybrid Data Center

Azure Virtual Desktop Hybrid lets organizations modernize virtual desktop infrastructure while retaining existing on-premises investments. Explore the business benefits, licensing considerations, and how Nutanix and Nerdio can simplify hybrid desktop operations.

For most organizations, the question has never been whether to embrace the cloud. It has been how to get there without stranding the infrastructure, skills, and budget already committed to the data center. With Microsoft’s announcement on September 1 that Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) Hybrid is now generally available, that question has a much better answer.

When AVD Hybrid entered public preview, my colleague Jason Webster covered how the service works and where it fits. With general availability, the conversation shifts from “what is it?” to “what can it do for our business?” This post focuses on that second question, and sets the stage for our upcoming November webinar with Nutanix and Nerdio.

From Preview to Production

AVD Hybrid keeps the AVD control plane in Azure (brokering, identity, diagnostics, and policy) while the session hosts run on infrastructure you own. Azure Arc connects those hosts to Azure, and users connect through the same Windows App they would use for a cloud-hosted desktop. General availability means this model is now supported for production workloads, which moves it from a lab experiment to something leadership can build a roadmap around.

Put Existing Investments To Work

Many organizations have recently refreshed data center hardware or standardized on a hypervisor platform. AVD Hybrid does not ask you to walk away from either. Session hosts can run on Microsoft Hyper-V, VMware vSphere, Nutanix AHV, Azure Local, or physical Windows Server hardware.

For leaders, the value is simple: the capital already spent on compute, storage, and networking keeps delivering, while the desktop platform gains a modern, Microsoft-managed service layer. Legacy components like on-premises connection brokers and RD Gateways can be retired, which reduces the number of systems your team has to patch, secure, and support.

A Cloud Strategy On Your Timeline

Digital transformation rarely happens in a single cutover. AVD Hybrid lets you adopt the cloud operating model first and move workloads second. That creates practical options:

  • Migrate Incrementally. Move user populations to Azure-hosted session hosts as hardware reaches end of life, without changing the management plane or user experience.
  • Burst When Demand Spikes. Keep steady-state users on-premises and add Azure capacity for seasonal peaks, projects, or mergers.
  • Exit Legacy VDI Deliberately. Transition away from platforms facing licensing or support uncertainty on a schedule that fits your budget cycle.

The result is a single desktop strategy that spans the data center and Azure, rather than two separate platforms competing for attention and funding.

Why Hybrid Instead Of Native AVD?

Native AVD in Azure is a proven platform, and for many organizations it remains the end goal. AVD Hybrid is not a competitor to that path. It gives leaders more ways to place each workload where it delivers the most value. Here are the strategies we see organizations gaining from it:

  • Match Workload Economics To The Right Platform. Steady, always-on desktop populations often run most cost-effectively on hardware you already own and are depreciating. Azure consumption can then be reserved for elastic, seasonal, or short-term needs where pay-as-you-go pricing shines.
  • Get More From Specialized Hardware. Organizations that have invested in on-premises GPU capacity for engineering, imaging, or design workloads can keep using it under the same AVD management plane, rather than paying for premium GPU instances in Azure.
  • Respect Data Gravity. When mission-critical applications and data can’t move yet, desktops can stay next to them. Think clinical systems like EHR; IT/OT environments supporting manufacturing, utilities, and facilities; emergency response and dispatch platforms; or large file repositories. Keeping desktops local avoids latency, respects network segmentation requirements, and eliminates the cost of moving large volumes of data across the WAN.
  • Align Migration With Refresh Cycles. Instead of a single large cloud commitment, each hardware refresh becomes a planned decision point: renew on-premises or move that population to Azure. Budgets stay predictable and cloud spend grows as value is proven.
  • Standardize Before You Migrate. Moving to the AVD control plane first means users, images, identity, and policies are already cloud-ready. When a workload does move to Azure, it is a change of location, not a change of platform.
  • Build Skills Without Disruption. Infrastructure teams keep using the hypervisor expertise they already have while building Azure, Arc, and AVD skills on a live platform, which lowers the risk and cost of the broader cloud transition.
  • Keep Strategic Flexibility. A single management plane across on-premises and Azure keeps placement a business decision. Workloads can shift in either direction as costs, regulations, or priorities change.

Native AVD remains the better fit for greenfield deployments, organizations with little data center footprint, or workloads that benefit from autoscale and Windows 11 multi-session. For everyone else, the most practical answer is often both, managed as one platform.

Control Where It Matters

Extending desktops beyond the data center only works if security and governance come along. AVD Hybrid addresses control on two fronts.

  • Access. Users authenticate with Microsoft Entra ID, so the Conditional Access and multifactor authentication policies you already apply to Microsoft 365 and cloud desktops extend to on-premises session hosts. Session hosts communicate outbound over HTTPS only, so there is no need to publish inbound gateways to the internet.
  • Infrastructure. Because every session host is Azure Arc-enabled, it can be governed like an Azure resource. Azure RBAC, Azure Policy, and Microsoft Defender for Cloud can be applied consistently, and the AVD console shows every host in one place regardless of where it runs. Meanwhile, user data and workloads remain in your facility, which supports data residency and regulatory requirements in industries like healthcare, financial services, and government.

What This Means for Leadership

Leadership Priority How AVD Hybrid Helps
Maximize Existing Investments Runs session hosts on the hypervisors and hardware you already own and support
Optimize Cost By Workload Keeps steady-state desktops on owned hardware and uses Azure for elastic demand
Advance The Cloud Strategy Adopts the Azure control plane now and moves workloads to Azure on your timeline
Reduce Operational Complexity Replaces on-premises brokers and gateways with a Microsoft-managed service
Strengthen Security & Compliance Applies Entra ID, Conditional Access, and Azure Arc governance while data stays local
Consistent User Experience One Windows App experience whether a desktop runs in Azure or your data center

Plan With Eyes Open

AVD Hybrid is a strong fit for many environments, but it is not a fit for everyone. A few items deserve attention during planning:

  • Licensing. Validate OS entitlements (such as RDS CALs with Software Assurance for Windows Server, or Microsoft 365 E3/E5 for Windows Enterprise) along with Microsoft’s AVD Hybrid service licensing before committing budget.
  • Lifecycle Automation. Autoscale, power management, and Start VM on Connect are not available for on-premises hosts. Provisioning relies on hypervisor tooling or partner solutions, which is where platforms like Nutanix and Nerdio come in.
  • Operating System Support. Windows 11 Enterprise multi-session is not supported on-premises, so multi-user desktops use Windows Server.
  • Connectivity. Brokering and management depend on reliable connectivity to Azure, so internet resiliency becomes part of the desktop design.

Bringing It Together: Nutanix & Nerdio

AVD Hybrid provides the control plane, but the on-premises experience is only as strong as the platform underneath it and the tools used to operate it. That is why the combination of Nutanix and Nerdio stands out.

Nutanix AHV As The Foundation.
Nutanix announced general availability of AVD Hybrid support on AHV, giving organizations an enterprise-proven platform for desktop workloads at scale. Prism management, built-in data services, disaster recovery, and extensive APIs give infrastructure teams the resilience and automation they expect from a modern data center.

Nerdio Manager For Operational Simplicity.
Nerdio Manager for Enterprise 8.2 adds AVD Hybrid support on Nutanix AHV, automating image management, host provisioning, and lifecycle tasks. Just as important for leadership, it manages AVD Hybrid alongside native AVD and Windows 365 from one console, with consolidated visibility into utilization and cost.

Together, they close the operational gaps that come with running session hosts on-premises and turn AVD Hybrid from a capability into a repeatable, manageable platform.

Build Your Hybrid Desktop Roadmap

eGroup works across the full hybrid stack, from Nutanix, VMware, and Hyper-V in the data center to Microsoft 365 and Azure in the cloud. That perspective helps us assess not just whether AVD Hybrid will work, but how it fits your broader infrastructure, security, and migration plans.

General availability removes one of the last reasons to wait. The organizations that benefit most will be those that treat AVD Hybrid not as a stopgap, but as the bridge that connects the investments, they have today to the cloud strategy they are building for tomorrow.
